HARRIS-WALZ VS DNC PLATFORM - EDUCATION

Early Childhood Education and Support

Where we find overlap is that both VP Harris and the DNC Platform call for federal funding and support in early childhood education as well as strengthening the Head Start program.

VP Harris vows to protect and strengthen programs “like Head Start”—a free Childhood education program for low-income students. She also calls for Universal preschool.
“[not going to let Trump and Republicans] end programs like Head Start that provide preschool and child care.”
The DNC platform calls for providing free and universal preschool for four year olds as well as strengthening Head Start—a free Childhood education program for low-income students.
“That’s why Democrats will provide free, universal preschool for four-year olds”
“and strengthen Head Start”
Curriculum Replacement and Book Banning

Where we find overlap is that both VP Harris and the DNC Platform advocate against book bans and curriculum changes that would alter our perception of American history.

VP Harris and Gov. Tim Walz both stand vehemently against laws that ban books and seek to remove certain topics such as African American and LGBTQ+ history. They do not “want to replace history” and believe it needs to be remembered.
“As a former teacher, I’m clear: We need to remember our history, not erase it,”
“they want to replace history with lies.”
“It is not only misleading, it is false”
The DNC Platform stands vehemently against laws that ban books stating that it cannot happen. They do not “erase history” and believe it needs to be remembered, even calling for the appointment of a federal coordinator to address states that ban books or change curriculums.
“banning books…We cannot let that happen.”
“And, where MAGA extremists are politicizing our classrooms, banning books, and trying to erase history, we are fighting back, including by appointing a federal coordinator to address the threat these bans pose to students’ civil rights”
Traditional 4-year colleges and apprenticeships

Where we find overlap is that both VP Harris and the DNC platform recognize that there are various paths to a good career that are not just a four year undergraduate degree and look to increase funding and jobs for those who have done apprenticeships or gone through trade school.

Vice President Harris promises that she will remove the “unnecessary degree requirements” needed for some federal jobs in order to “increase jobs” on the market for those without a four-year degree.” She continues by urging private sector companies to do the same and “to recognize the value of other paths, such as apprenticeships and technical programs.”
“As president, I will get rid of the unnecessary degree requirements for federal jobs to increase jobs for folks without a four-year degree,”
“Our nation needs to recognize the value of other paths, additional paths, such as apprenticeships and technical programs.”
The DNC platform recognizes that “four year college is not the only pathway to a good career” and advocates investing in other forms of education. It also wants to make “trade school and community college” free for all Americans.
“Four year college is not the only pathway to a good career, so Democrats are investing in other forms of education as well, including career and technical education”
“It’ll make trade school and community college free for every American.”
Public School funding

Where we find overlap is that both VP Harris and the DNC platform advocate for investing more money into our public schools whether that is through raising teacher wages or through being against tuition tax-credits.

Vice President Harris proposed in 2019 an average raise of $13,500 for public school teachers arguing that “we fail to pay teachers their value.” This is the first of a kind proposal aimed at increasing the wages of public school teachers.
“As president, I will make the largest federal investment in teacher pay in U.S. history. We will fully close the teacher pay gap during my first term, and provide the average teacher a $13,500 raise.”
“And as you may know, I am a proud product of public education.”
“will fight to protect our teachers and our students from discrimination”
“and our teachers (...) you all do God’s work, educating our children,”
The DNC platform argues against the RNC proposal of private school vouchers and other similar proposals saying that these are “schemes” which “divert taxpayer-funded resources away from public education.” It advocates for public schools to continue receiving similar or more funding.
“We oppose the use of private-school vouchers, tuition tax credits, opportunity scholarships, and other schemes that divert taxpayer-funded resources away from public education. Public tax dollars should never be used to discriminate.”
