Scroll down to see the candidates' stances on the most contested topics of this election:

Abortion

Where we find opposition is in the idea of a national law codifying Roe V. Wade, with VP Harris and Gov Walz. advocating support for a national law and former President Trump and Sen. Vance advocating to let states decide.

VP Harris and Gov. Walz would codify the protections given by Roe v. Wade which would make the regulations on Abortion federal and equal across all states. Furthermore, they would continue to uphold IVF protections.
“And I pledge to you, when Congress passes a bill to put back in place the protections of Roe v. Wade as President of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law.”
“As President, she will never allow a national abortion ban to become law. And when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom nationwide, she will sign it.”
Former President Trump and Sen. Vance believe that Trump “did a great service” by helping overturn Roe v. Wade and returning the issue back to the states. It is unclear whether or not he will sign a federal abortion ban but he “does believe in the exceptions” such as rape, incest, and life of the mother. Trump has commented he would remove “all costs” related to IVF in one speech but has no official policy out
“My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land,”
“Now, I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother. I believe strongly in it.”
“I did a great service” in regards to overturning Roe V Wade
Immigration

Where we find opposition is in the policies which they would enact. VP Harris and Gov. Walz would sign HR 815, where you can find more details below. Former President Trump and Sen. Vance have a range of policies ranging from ending BirthRight Citizenship, removal of federal funding for undocumented people, and a mass deportation of 15 million plus individuals using the US military if necessary.

VP Harris and Gov. Walz are in favor of HR 815 which was shut down by Senate Republicans in 2023 due to Donald Trump advocating against it. This bill provides pathways for Afghani Immigrants who helped the US in the war, as well as allowing migrants who enter through legal points to be under federal supervision for 90 days while they fill out Asylum papers and interviews. It also allows for the government to shut down the border for 24 hours if crossing numbers get too high with 270 days being the cap and hiring more staff at the border.
“And that bill would have put 1,500 more border agents on the border to help those folks who are working there right now over time trying to do their job… That bill would have put more resources to allow us to prosecute transnational criminal organizations for trafficking in guns, drugs, and human beings.”
“As President, she will sign the bipartisan border bill that will fund detection technology to intercept even more illicit drugs and she’ll keep fighting to end the opioid epidemic.”

Former President Trump and Sen. Vance are in favor of MASS deportation of every undocumented immigrant using local law enforcement, the National Guard, and if needed the US military. Donald Trump has laid out a policy that ADDS SERIAL NUMBERS to immigrants that he wants to deport in order to assist law enforcement to carry out his plan for mass deportation. They have suggested deporting legal migrants to countries which they do not originate from, such as deporting Haitian immigrants to Venezuela, even though they are legal immigrants and not from Venezuela. They also propose to end birthright citizenship and amnesty, calling it a “catastrophe” in America. Furthermore, they will ensure that undocumented immigrants do not receive any federal funding or welfare programs and the border wall be built back.

Trump’s words are already having massively negative consequences in cities like Springfield, Ohio. Government buildings and city schools have already had multiple closures, spurred by bomb and shooting threats, and members of the legally immigrated Haitian community have been targeted. Source
“But we’re getting the criminals out, and we’re going to do that fast, and we know who they are, and the local police know their names, and they know their serial numbers,”
“We'll be bringing them out of the country.”
“”My order will also end their unfair practice known as birth tourism”
“ I will sign an executive order making clear to federal agencies that under the correct interpretation of the law, going forward, the future children of illegal aliens will not receive automatic U.S. citizenship.”
“The most important reform needed right now is a total ban on Biden using taxpayer dollars to free illegal aliens — and criminal penalties for administrative noncompliance, which happens every single minute of every single day.”
“Any form of amnesty now would be a catastrophe”
“We will be using local law enforcement… National Guard…. if necessary, I'd have to go a step further.”
“I built much more wall than I ever thought necessary.”
“"We're going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country," he told reporters during a news conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. "And we're going to start with Springfield and Aurora… back to Venezuela”
Gun Control

Where we find opposition is in their beliefs about the roles of guns in society and the policies that would be enacted. VP Harris and Gov. Walz believe mass shooting events will be limited by common sense gun reform, whereas former President Trump and Sen. Vance believe that we do not have a gun problem but rather external factors such as spiritual problems and thus propose passing a policy to make concealed carry legal across state lines.

VP Harris and Gov. Walz advocate for common sense gun reform and control in order to make communities safer, believing that with gun control mass shooting events will be limited. This includes banning assault weapons, universal background checks, supporting red flag laws to make sure “dangerous people” do not get guns, and training officers in gun violence prevention programs.
“She’ll ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require universal background checks, and support red flag laws that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. She will also continue to invest in funding law enforcement, including the hiring and training of officers and people to support them, and will build upon proven gun violence prevention programs that have helped reduce violent crime throughout the country.”
“I've made very clear my position on… taking everyone's guns away. Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We're not taking anybody's guns away.”
Former President Trump and Sen. Vance believe that the Second Amendment is under attack and will pass a policy to make concealed carry legal across the country. They believe the root of gun violence is not guns but external factors in one’s life such as spirituality. They want to continue “to be the best friend gun owners have ever had in the White house” during his term and will enforce current gun laws “against convicted felons” through law enforcement. He has stated in the past that regarding school shootings Ameircans have “to get over it” and “move forward” regardless of how tragic they may be.
“We'll see a continuation of supporting and defending the Second Amendment, and really where that comes into play is, you know, the judiciary”
“This is not a gun problem”
“For four incredible years it was my honor to be the best friend gun owners have ever had in the White House.”
“The right of self-defense everywhere it is under siege. And I will sign concealed carry reciprocity. Your Second Amendment does not end at the state line.”
“I will insist that local jurisdictions return to proven common sense policing measures, such as stop and frisk— very simple—you stop them and you frisk them, strictly enforcing existing gun laws against convicted felons”
“Have to get over it, we have to move forward”
Healthcare

Where we find opposition in their beliefs is in the Affordable Care Act. VP Harris and Gov. Walz would expand upon the ACA, but Former President Trump and Sen. Vance would dismantle it with no plan for a replacement.

VP Harris and Gov. Walz advocate for expanding the Affordable care act and making the tax credit for health care premiums permanent. They would also cap insulin at $35 and a $2,000 cap on out of pocket spending for seniors and continue to negotiate with Big Pharma on life saving drugs. Finally, they would remove medical debt on credit reports and help cancel $7 billion of medical debt.
“Vice President Harris will make affordable health care a right, not a privilege by expanding and strengthening the Affordable Care Act and making permanent the Biden-Harris tax credit enhancements that are lowering health care premiums by an average of about $800 a year for millions of Americans. She’ll build on the Biden-Harris Administration’s successes in bringing down the cost of lifesaving prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries by extending the $35 cap on insulin and $2,000 cap on out-of-pocket spending for seniors to all Americans. Her tie-breaking vote on the Inflation Reduction Act gave Medicare the power to go toe to toe with Big Pharma and negotiate lower drug prices. As President, she’ll accelerate the negotiations to cover more drugs and lower prices for Americans. As Vice President, she also announced that medical debt will be removed from credit reports, and helped cancel $7 billion of medical debt for 3 million Americans. As President, she’ll work with states to cancel medical debt for even more Americans.”
Former President Trump and Sen. Vance are against the Affordable Care Act but do not have a replacement policy with Trump stating has “concepts of a plan” when asked. They would advocate to fire members of the DHS who are engaged in “left wing censorship” across the government. Finally, they would address mental health through the use of mental institutions.
“I have concepts of a plan.”
“And I will begin the process of identifying and firing every federal bureaucrat who has engaged in domestic censorship—directly or indirectly—whether they are the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services
“And for those who are severely mentally ill and deeply disturbed, we will bring them back to mental institutions, where they belong,”
